Why Does God Stay Mysterious?

Mystery?

Why Does God Stay Mysterious to Humanity?

Have you ever wondered why God doesn’t do something spectacular for all humanity—something so powerful that every camera and media outlet would capture it for the world to see? Why does God seem to stay hidden or mysterious?

I remember my pastor, Nathan Elms, preaching a message years ago that asked the same question. He reminded us that sometimes, God’s silence and mystery speak louder than miracles. I also recall the very first sermon I heard at First Church Charlotte, preached by my pastor’s father in 1996:

“Let God Be True and Every Man a Liar.”

That message taught me that even when we don’t see visible proof, God’s truth remains constant. Later, I heard another unforgettable sermon by Paul Mooney, titled “God’s Revenge.” That message became a turning point for me—it inspired my passion for using media and technology to introduce humanity to the Kingdom of God.

Why Doesn’t God Do Something Spectacular for Everyone to See?

It’s easy to wonder why God doesn’t make Himself visibly known. Why doesn’t He, for example, float a giant 18-wheeler truck around the top of the Bank of America building in Charlotte, NC, flashing the words, “I am God, and I am here”?

The answer lies in the nature of faith and the spiritual world. God has chosen to keep us shrouded from the full reality of the spiritual so that we experience it only through faith. The spiritual realm—like thoughts, dreams, and imagination—is invisible to the physical senses of sight, touch, taste, hearing, and smell.

Scripture tells us that one day, “every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.”

Until that day, God has chosen to work through His Church, the “called-out ones,” as the Greek word ekklesia means. Through His people, the world sees glimpses of His presence, grace, and truth.

God’s Mystery and the Spiritual Mirror

So why does God remain a mystery? To answer that, we can look at how God created the physical world to reflect the spiritual. Just as our imagination and dreams are real yet untouchable, so too is the spiritual realm—real, but not seen by human eyes.

In the same way that a husband and wife know each other intimately, the Church—the Bride of Christ—will one day know God in a deep and personal way.

Adam, the first man, chose to share in his wife’s fall. But Jesus, the second Adam, chose to die for His bride, the Church, as a sinless man. And after His death, Jesus rose victorious over death, hell, and the grave.

The Gospel: God’s Plan Revealed

The Lord remains a mystery for now so that we may seek Him freely and enter into His Kingdom through obedience to the Gospel—the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This is the good news:

  • Jesus died for our sins.
  • He was buried and took our guilt with Him.
  • He rose again so that we could have new life.

Through this divine mystery, we discover God’s ultimate purpose—not to perform spectacles for the cameras, but to transform hearts through faith, repentance, and relationship.

Final Thoughts

God’s mystery is not meant to hide God from us but instead to draw us closer to God through faith and the example of creation all around us. Every invisible dream, every quiet moment of prayer, and every act of obedience, as well as every beautiful sunset, or every starry night, and every beautiful scene in nature reflects the spiritual reality that God is near—even when unseen.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7

The Gospel reminds us that true revelation doesn’t come through media or miracles—it comes through Jesus Christ, the One who conquered death and revealed the ultimate mystery of God’s love to each one of us personally, with arms open wide.
